—THE STORY
The face of a new
fashion era—and
the voice behind it.
Shot for FNM Issue 014 against a single crimson wall, she asked for no retouching. “The point of a cover,” she told us, “is to look like someone, not something.”
iscovered at seventeen in a Khartoum market while visiting family, Zara El-Amin arrived in New York with a portfolio shot on a borrowed phone and a walk that casting directors described as “architectural.” Within two seasons she was opening for houses that had never booked a Sudanese model before.
What separates El-Amin from the pack is what happens off the runway. Her foundation funds model-housing cooperatives in three cities, and her contract riders — mandating diverse hair and makeup teams — have quietly become an industry template.
In conversation with Zara El-Amin
Because promises evaporate at call time. Paper doesn't. I watched too many friends sit in chairs where nobody knew how to light them or style their hair. That ends with me.
FNM — YOUR CONTRACT RIDERS HAVE BECOME FAMOUS. WHY PUT DIVERSITY CLAUSES IN WRITING?
FNM — YOU OPENED SHOWS FOR HOUSES THAT HAD NEVER BOOKED A SUDANESE MODEL. DID THAT WEIGH ON YOU?
At first, enormously. Then I realised the weight was the point. If me walking makes the next girl's casting ordinary, then every step was worth it.
FNM — WHAT COMES AFTER MODELLING?
I'm not sure modelling ever ends — but the foundation is the legacy. Housing, contracts, education. The walk opens the door; the work keeps it open.
FNM — YOU ASKED FOR NO RETOUCHING ON THIS COVER. WHY?
I have a niece who zooms into photographs of me. I want her to find pores, texture, a real face. Perfection is a lie we sell to children.
