—THE STORY
The quiet radical rebuilding Paris couture from the atelier up.
She employs eleven artisans, pays them above union rate, and closes the atelier every August. "Exhaustion," she says, "is the least chic thing a house can produce."
sabelle Moreau spent fifteen years as the invisible hand behind some of Paris's most celebrated collections — the pattern-cutter creative directors called at midnight. In 2023 she resigned, rented a sixth-floor atelier in the Marais, and announced a house with a radical rule: one collection a year, made entirely within four kilometres of her cutting table.
Her debut — twenty-two looks, every seam finished by hand — sold out to private clients before the first editorial ran. The industry press called it "the slowest revolution in fashion."
In conversation with Isabelle Moreau
Because I was making beautiful things inside a system that treated the makers as furniture. I wanted my name on the door so that eleven other names could be on the pay slip.
FNM — You were the person creative directors called at midnight. Why leave?
FNM — One collection a year in an industry that demands six. Is that a business model or a manifesto?
It is arithmetic. A hand-finished seam takes the hours it takes. You can either lie about the hours or lie about the finish. I refuse to lie about either.
FNM — What does the industry still not understand about “slow fashion”?
That it is not a trend, it is a supply chain. You cannot sprinkle slowness on a machine built for speed. You have to rebuild the machine. That is the work.
FNM — Everything is made within four kilometres of your atelier. Why the radius?
So I can walk to every pair of hands that touches the garment. Luxury used to mean proximity — the tailor knew your name. We globalised that intimacy away. I am simply walking it back.
