—THE STORY

The 19-year-old dragging UK rap somewhere entirely new.

He still records in Peckham, still produces for kids from his old estate for free, and still takes the bus. "The 36 goes past three of my plaques," he grins. "Best route in London."

REX — born Andre Okafor in Peckham — uploaded his first mixtape at sixteen, recorded on a microphone borrowed from his school's drama department. By the third tape, "Estate Jazz," he was folding live saxophone and broken-beat into grime structures, and the scene's gatekeepers didn't know whether to fight him or sign him.

The night-bus freestyle — two minutes, one take, filmed by a friend — has been viewed sixty million times. He turned down three label offers before signing a distribution-only deal that keeps every master in his name.

In conversation with DREX

Watching older man on the estate who signed everything away at my age. They got a chain and a car; the label got their life. I wanted the plaques on my wall, not theirs.

FNM — You kept your masters when everyone told you to cash in. Where did that discipline come from?

FNM — "Estate Jazz" confused the purists. Was that the intention?

Nah, the intention was honesty. My dad played Coltrane, my brother played grime, my mum played highlife. That tape is just my house on a Sunday. If that confuses people, their house was too quiet.

FNM — What does success look like at 25?

A studio in Peckham with my name on the lease and ten youngers engineering their own tapes inside it. And my mum never checking a price tag again.

FNM — The night-bus freestyle changed everything. Did you know when you recorded it?

I knew it was cold, that's all. One take because my boy's phone was on 4%. Maybe that's why it worked — no time to be anything but true.
